The tablet with Emperor Qianlong's inscription On Lamas in four languages (Manchu, Chinese, Mongol and Tibetan) stands at Lama Temple, Beijing. In addition to clarifying the tenet of “invigorating Gelug and thus pacifying Mongolia,” the inscription written in 1792 emphasized the origin and malpractices of Living Buddha reincarnation and proposed a new method of drawing lots from a golden urn. Practice proves that such system has played a key role in maintaining national unity and social stability and developing Tibetan Buddhism from Qing Dynasty onwards. (Yang Hongjiao)
